When people ask me what a CSA is, I try to explain it as simply as possible. I go over how you’re getting the ingredients directly from the farm and how the money goes straight to the farmers, effectively cutting out any middle man. It’s a wonderful concept, though I do point out that it has flaws.
The first issue that arises, particularly here in New England, is that there are a lot of ingredients that can’t be grown year round. If you’re in California, you have the luxury of getting a larger variety of fruits and vegetables. But not here.
The second is that it can be hard to find a CSA that drops off in the city. A lot of them deliver to various towns (mainly at farmer’s markets), but for those that do not have cars, this can be problematic. So when Eric and I found a CSA that dealt with both of these issues, we immediately signed up.
Enterprise Farm is a certified organic farm located in Whately, MA, near Amherst. The way their “farm share” works is they provide as much produce as possible (currently, potatoes and a few other root vegetables), while sourcing out to a variety of small, organic, East Coast farms. One week we’ll receive collard greens from North Carolina, fresh strawberries from Georgia the next.
And they deliver to Boston!
Enterprise Farm recently hosted a breakfast and Eric and I decided to make the trip out there. It was a wonderful morning, starting with a fantastic meal (see the picture above: whole wheat pancakes, collard greens with maple syrup, fresh strawberries, sausage and bacon).
We quickly gobbled up a couple plates and proceeded to walk around and schmooze (and take lots of pictures of all the beautiful produce). Dave, the “founding farmer,” and Katey, the farm share membership manager, were both delightful to talk to and were more than happy to answer any of our questions.
If anyone is interested in joining a CSA, there are a number of resources on the web. Local Harvest has a field where you can search by zip code and has a little description about each program.
And now moving on to that giveaway you’ve all been waiting for! And it is (drum roll please) for a $40 CSN Gift Certificate! Woo hoo!
For those who aren’t aware, CSN is a network of online stores (the company is based in Boston), that range from adjustable bar stools to bakeware to blenders (if you don’t have an immersion blender, I highly recommend getting one). CSN has over 20 online stores, so you can find pretty much anything you can think of.
And now they’re giving one of you, my readers, the chance to win a gift certificate.
{The Giveaway Guidelines}
THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED. The winner will be announced on Friday, January 28th. Come back to find out who won!
Now, this wouldn’t be a post without a recipe. So, I’ll leave you today with one of the delicious dishes we were treated to at Enterprise Farm. It may sound strange, but collard greens with maple syrup is the perfect accompaniment to pancakes and is a great way to bring some vegetable to an otherwise carb and protein heavy meal.
Collard Greens with Maple Syrup
1 1/2 pounds collard greens, rinsed
1 tbsp butter
pure maple syrup
a pinch of salt
Using a knife, remove the stems and center ribs. Cut each into 3/4 inch pieces.
Fill a medium size pot with water and add the pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil. Once this has occurred, add collard greens, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 25 minutes, or until the greens are tender.
Drain greens and put back in the pot. Add butter and mix with the greens until it has melted.
Serve with a generous pour of maple syrup.

I would use a gift certificate to get some gadgets I'd love to have but have a hard time justifying otherwise – a mango splitter and avacado slicer and maybe while i'm on the theme – a new apple slicer as well since mine is getting pretty dull!
ha- funny to see CSA's across the country tend to be doling out pretty much the same fare this time of year. I saw a tomato at the market today and i almost didn't recognize it:) good luck w the giveaway…
The breakfast is a great example of how engaging CSA projects can be. We went to a social put on by our CSA on pickup night and ended up with some great recipes.
I've never heard of collard greens with maple before. I love greens and now have a new way to try them.

I've gotten to know Enterprise through the Somerville Winter Market and they're really great people. I also got some of those strawberries this past weekend as well as some cilantro. Quite a treat in the dead middle of winter.
I would use the certificate towards a stability ball or a toaster. The first, because I need something to balance out all the tasty food I eat and the second because I don't have one and am not sure it's safe to toast bread over a gas flame.
That's a hearty breakfast!
It would go towards the purchase of either a Zwilling or Wusthof knife set. Dream!
